If you’ve ever wanted to visit Portugal, then you are no stranger to Lisbon or even the Algarve region. One spot not spoken about as much is Porto, but it has to be one of the most underrated cities in Europe.

Here are 5 reasons you should add Porto, Portugal to your bucket list!

Port Wine

Port is a type of wine originating from the Duoro Valley region of Portugal. The wine is typically made along the Duoro River and historically was shipped down stream, on Rabelo Boats, to Porto before heading off to England.

Today, the boats can still be seen along the river in Porto and can even be taken on sightseeing cruises.

Many Port tasting rooms can be found along the riverside in the Porto town center. So, when visiting Porto, trying out a wine tasting in town along the river is definitely a must do!

The Lello Bookstore

Calling all Harry Potter fans! The Lello Bookstore (also known as Livraria Lello & Irmão) is the location J.K Rowling used as inspo for the Hogwarts library after living there in the 90s.

It was also listed by Lonely Planet as the 3rd greatest bookshop in the world.

It’ll cost you a 5 euro fee to get in, but I swear it’ll be worth it!

Situated along the Duomo river, you’ll find many port wine cellars charming restaurants, local shops and even street artists along this UNESCO World Heritage site.

It’s the perfect spot to spend an afternoon of port tasting or an evening with delicious portuguse food and views of the Duomo River.

Luís I Bridge

One of the symbols of Porto, this two level bridge stands at almost 45 meters and crosses the Duoro River. Pedestrians are able to cross both the upper and lower level, but road traffic is routed to the lower level while the light rail follows the upper level.

Views from the upper deck of the bridge are some of the best of the city and you’ll find locals and tourists alike enjoying the views at sunset!
